The Suicide of the West: A Tale of Two Miracles - Crisis Magazine

The Suicide of the West: A Tale of Two Miracles - Crisis Magazine: “There is no God in this book.” Thus reads the provocative first sentence of Jonah Goldberg’s latest release, The Suicide of the West: How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism, and Identity Politics is Destroying American Democracy. This declaration is perhaps an unintended summary of the book about the crisis in the West. From it, …

In England, the Child is the “Mere Creature of the State” - Crisis Magazine

In England, the Child is the “Mere Creature of the State” - Crisis Magazine: In the case of the now-deceased toddler, Alfie Evans, the British government, through its Royal College of Pediatrics and its courts, had legal authority. Alfie had legal “interests,” which the government defined in his case, but he did not have any “rights.” Alfie’s parents only had a right to be heard; they had no substantive rights …

What Really Happened at Charlotte Catholic HS - Crisis Magazine

What Really Happened at Charlotte Catholic HS - Crisis Magazine: The angry Tweets started before the nun’s talk ended. “My dad doesn’t love me because I’m gay?” followed by a supportive amen chorus, “We got you, man.” Such was the level of debate that began even before the end of Sister Jane Dominic Laurel’s talk to an all-school assembly at Charlotte Catholic High School last …

Why the Left Is So Seductive - Crisis Magazine

Why the Left Is So Seductive - Crisis Magazine: Much has been written in recent decades, and with good reason, about the institutions that shape culture (academia, the mainstream media, the entertainment industry), their liberal bias, and how they can be effective evangelists for the Left. However, this essay will explore forces within the human person—formidable but not irresistible—that go back to the Garden …

What We Know About Evil, Hell, and Final Damnation - Crisis Magazine

What We Know About Evil, Hell, and Final Damnation - Crisis Magazine: “Hell is the place God created for the angels who rebelled against him. The Great Lie: Pope Benedict XVI On Socialism - Crisis Magazine

The Great Lie: Pope Benedict XVI On Socialism - Crisis Magazine: One doesn’t usually expect a thorough-going reconstruction of the history of socialism in the late 19th century from the pope, but Benedict XVI delivered to us a wonderful–and oh-so-needed–reminder of what socialism was (and is), and why it went wrong. One can’t but marvel at his intellectual power: He has discerned the essential problem that …

Pronouns, Prefixes, and the Cult of the Self - Crisis Magazine

Pronouns, Prefixes, and the Cult of the Self - Crisis Magazine: This will sound like a humorous question, but it is one I have turned over in my mind for months now, and one that cultural conservatives and practicing Christians will eventually have to confront: how much should we care about pronouns? Put differently, should we care that one individual wants to be called “they”? Or …

Same-Sex Parenting: The Child Maltreatment No One Mentions - Crisis Magazine

Same-Sex Parenting: The Child Maltreatment No One Mentions - Crisis Magazine: Recently, Utah found it necessary to put a law into effect that allows “free-range parenting.” That is, parents are free to make the judgment that their children are, say, free to walk to the local park by themselves or to bike a couple of blocks away from home without child protective services showing up at …

Idolatry

All idolatry of self has at its core the three lusts found in 1 John 2:16: “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
If we are to escape modern idolatry, we have to admit that it is rampant and reject it in all its forms. It is not of God, but of Satan, and in it we will never find fulfillment. This is the great lie and the same one Satan has been telling since he first lied to Adam and Eve. Sadly, we are still falling for it. Even more sadly, many churches are propagating it in the preaching of the health, wealth, and prosperity gospel built on the idol of self-esteem. But we will never find happiness focusing on ourselves. Our hearts and minds must be centered on God and on others. This is why when asked what is the greatest commandment, Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”
